Travelling in the Country
The most convenient way to travel within Bhutan is to engage the services of a vehicle and driver from a reputable car rental company or a tourism service provider. Bhutan does not permit the rental of self-drive vehicles. Alternatively, you can arrange for a local driver or transport service through hotels, tour operators, or tourism service providers. Many hotels also offer transportation options or can facilitate arrangements for your journey.
Bhutan is accessible through four airports, strategically located in the western, central, southern, and eastern regions of the country. While airlines strive to offer reliable services, Bhutan’s unique terrain can occasionally lead to unpredictable flight schedules. Yonphula Airport, situated in the eastern part of Bhutan, is particularly susceptible to weather-related delays during the summer months due to its altitude and micro-climate. Flights to this airport may experience sporadic delays or cancellations. Additional domestic airports are situated in Bumthang and Gelephu, with the international gateway being Paro.
To ensure a smooth travel experience, we recommend reaching out to us at gangritt@gmail.com or local tour operators before planning domestic flights or any other travel arrangements within the country. For domestic flights, the check-in baggage allowance is 30kg for business class and 20kg for economy class. International travelers should carry their passports with a minimum validity of six months at all times.
For those seeking a unique travel experience, the Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Limited (RBHSL) offers private hire services. Initially established for emergency medical evacuations, RBHSL also caters to heli-hiking and other guest services, providing quicker access to distant locations while offering breathtaking aerial views of Bhutan. Please note that helicopter flights are subject to clear and calm weather conditions.
